Accomplishments through the years....

  • In  2007, the anesthesiology training programs of specialty hospitals of the  Department of Health namely Fabella and Philippine Orthopedic Center were revoked. These program did not have the adequate number of cases as well the case mix required by the Philippine Board of Anesthesiology (PBA).  Fabella was primarily an obstetric and gynecologic center so the case mix was sorely deficient. But I could not bear to have these training programs lose accreditation.

  • I requested an audience with the Assistant Director for Health Resources of the Department of Health ( Dr. Kenneth Ronquillo) and inquired about the possibility of forming a Consortium of Anesthesia Residency Training of specialty hospitals  under the umbrella of the DOH.

  •  Dr . Ronquillo welcomed the idea of a consortium. And after a meeting with  the Chairpersons of  Department of Anesthesiology of the Philippine Orthopedic Center, the National Children's Hospital, the Lung Center of the Philippines and the Philippine Heart Center and a the Dr Jose Fabella Hospital a MOA was signed forming the first DOH CONSORTIUM OF ANESTHESIA TRAINING and this program was accredited by the PBA in October 2008. I was designated as its first Officer-in Charge and currently I still serve its council of advisers.

  • Valenzuela Medical Center was a new addition to the DOH CART in 2017.

  • To date, DOH CART has graduated almost 50  anesthesiologists practicing all over the Philippines.

Realizing that provincial chapters  because of geographical hindrances make it difficult for members to  meet regularly for chapter activities and knowing that there is an increasing number of  members of the Philippine Society of Anesthesiologists (PSA)  in the provinces, I proposed to the PSA Board   the creation of new chapters so that our PSA members may be able to work together and schedule continuing professional activities (CPD) activities more efficiently.

Nine new provincial chapters were formed from 2014-2015.

  • Central Luzon New Chapters

    1. Tarlac

    2. Pampanga

    3. Bulacan

    4. Bataan, Olongapo, Zambalez (BOZ)

    5. Nueva Ecija

  • Northwestern Luzon

    1.  La Union

    2. Northwestern Luzon-Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur and Abra

  •  Northeastern Luzon:

    1. Cagayan, Kalinga, Apayao, Batanes, Northern Isabela, Cabangan, Quezon Isabela

    2. Southern Cagayan- Santiago, Isabela, Quirino

Institutionalizing the Title of Fellow, Philippine Society of Anesthesiologists (FPSA)

  • In 2015, driven by the desire to preserve/ensure that quality of care standards are not marred by conflict of interest, I scheduled a meeting with  the Chair of the Board of Medicine Dr Miguel Noche  to mandate the Society to confer the title of Fellow to qualified anesthesiologists - FPSA  . After  several discussions with Chair of the PRC Board of Medicine and then the members of the Board of Trustees of the PBA, finally a PSA Resolution was drafted in October 2015 creating the title Fellow, Philippine Society of Anesthesiologists, Inc.

  • I  emphasized to members  that while the title Diplomate is properly granted by the Specialty Board after having passed the examinations required by Board to become a specialist, the conferment of the title Fellow should be granted by the Society to a Diplomate in good standing which ideally is a lifelong commitment of the member. After all, it is the Society where a member pays dues, pursues continuing professional development trough meetings and conferences.

  • On November 27, 2015 the first conferement of Fellows of the the PSA (FPSA) took place     A total of 460 Diplomates of more thank 5 years and in good standing with the PSA  were conferred the title FPSA

To assist training programs in planning their didactic activities, I  created a PBA  curriculum task force to develop a curriculum guide for anesthesia trainees.   The aim was to standardize the basic science knowledge requirements and their  clinical applications for the trainees nationwide.

The product was a curriculum guide adopted from the Royal College of Anaesthetists (RCOA) Curriculum, and she obtained the permission for its adoption from Dr. Peter Nightingale, President of the RCOA. The Competency based Curriculum guide was finalized and distributed to the various training hospitals during the conferment ceremonies. This was made possible via the creation of Task Force to  come up with standardized training module to serve as a guide for both the trainors and trainees in all accredited training centers in the Philippines

FAST FORWARD TO TODAY.... I realized this is not a curriculum... its just a list of what trainees are required to read. HPEd has made me realize how little I know about formal education and training. .. beginning with what a curriculum is and is not...

Online Deployment of the Continuing Demonstration of Qualification (CDQ )

  • The CDQ was  first conceived by Drs.  Benijgno Sulit and Corazon Arcangel  before 2011 as a form of recertification for diplomates.

  • in 2011, I created a committee to start implementation and pilot testing of the ONLINE CDQ for Diplomates on their 10th year of being a Diplomate.

  • The first online CDQ took place in October 2011.

FAST FORWARD TO TODAY.... The CDQ team which included myself craftted the CDQ questions.. and we all took this same exam... and of course we all passed.. is that really valid??

THE AENDICUS

  • Realizing the need to benchmark the practice of anesthesia in our training institutions and promote a culture of safety by learning through anonymous reporting of critical events, I conceptualized  the AENDICUS  - the Anesthesia Digital Census ( prior to this, cases were written in logbooks and submitted to the PBA office to gather dust...

  • This was pilot-tested in February, 2011

  • AENDICUS training workshops have since been conducted by the AENDICUS team in Manila, Cebu, Bacolod, Davao, and Baguio.

  • To date, the AENDICUS database has a aggregate total  of more than 1 million cases logged in online database by trainees nationwide

  • Enhancements have been developed the AENDICUS Committee  and the  launching  of the AENDICUS Version3 will be in January 2019. This will include a streamlined data form and the online resident evaluation (DOPS, MiniCex and Case-Based Discussions)

  • Some trivia:

The AENDICUS acronym and logo was inspired by our national tree – the NARRA whose scientific name is Pterocarpus indicus. The logo of the AENDICUS thus signifies strength and knowledge that endures the test of time

Obstetric Anesthesia is my passion.

  1. World Federation Societies of Anaesthesiologists (WFSA) – member, Obstetric Anaesthesia Committee since 2012

  2. Obstetric Anaesthesia Society of Asia & Oceania (OASAO) - Was a member of the organizing committee  for the Inaugural Meeting of the OASAO November 2001 in Mactan, Cebu; Then went on to be a member of the Executive Committee of the OASAO up to the present

Majority of my lectures are on obstetric  anesthesia  topics including simulation. I love traveling abroad to learn from experts and share my own anesthesia expericences....

  1. First International Symposium on Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology in Poland

  2. CPR workstation in the high risk obstetric fire drills and delivered a lecture on The Pregnant Patient with Eisenmenger Syndrome in the First World Congress of Anesthesia for Obstetrics in Bali, Indonesia in the First World Congress of Obstetric Anaesthesia in Bali Indonesia

But home will always be the best place to teach and learn.
